ellO gallery & shop is a mixture of a (commercial+affordable) contemporary art gallery, alternative exhibition space, retail space for individual artists selling handmade goods & moderately priced works & also an infopoint for the contemporary art community in Portsmouth and beyond. We hope to engage the public's interest in contemporary art (through direct projects with the public, including classes, screenings, performances & other initiatives) as well as promoting the idea of buying moderately priced handmade items and objects made by independant artists & designers. We work primarily with emerging and/or young artists (from the Seacoast area of New Hampshire as well as from around the world) and especially like to work with artists who are under-represented or who "work outside the system". It is not important to us if you have a BFA, MFA or have even been inside of a fine arts school. We are looking for well-formed, innovative & experimental ideas. We are also fiercely environmental and are especially interested in artists utilising recycled & re-used materials or who are working with environmental/ecological themes.
SUBMISSIONS:
Submissions are open to both emerging & established artists interested in exhibiting and selling their work. We are open to various kinds of ideas and encourage people to contact us:

ellO gallery&shop is offering up an open call for the exhibit "Monsters”, which will open October 1st and continue until November 3rd

What is a monster? During the magical month of October ellO will be figuring this out with a group show exploring everything from classical film-style horror monsters to the darker sides of nature and/or humanity (everyone generally can name a human they think is a monster). Monster trucks? Sea Monsters? Adolf Hitler or Paris Hilton? The choice is up to the artists but the interpretation is up to all.

With your submission, please include the following information:
- What type of medium/materials you use
- If the work will be hanging (wall/from ceiling), sculptural or video. If piece is hanging IT MUST BE READY TO HANG!
- An idea of your price range (we encourage economical pricing, and our commission is 50/50)
- The number of pieces you’d like to include (with approximate sizes) for consideration for the exhibition.
- A way to contact you, e-mail and/or phone number are required.

If the work(s) is/are already completed, please e-mail us photos of the work(s). If you will be creating new work for this show please try to send us sketches, other visuals or some kind of outline to help us understand what your plan is. Please also make sure to send us images of your other work or a link to a web-portfolio so we can see examples of your work.

All of this information is VERY important to us in helping to plan the show. The more information you give us, the better.

Deadline for applying: Monday, September 8, 2008
Absolute Deadline for finished product: Monday, September 22, 2008
We will NOT be accepting last-minute submissions, so please stick to the deadline.

To apply, just send us an e-mail (submissions(at)ellogallery(dot)com) with the subject “Monsters call”. Tell us your name, location & idea or if you have existing work which fits the theme already. We will review applications & will contact you with an answer. We will make sure to let artists know if they are in or not.

You must fill out a contract if you have not already with us.
